Discovery Middle School is a three-story, 125,000 square foot facility that organizes its 800 students into small learning ‘communities’. The school’s design theme is based on an ‘academic village’ where classrooms are clustered around central plazas instead of being lined up along long corridors. Each of the three stories houses a distinct village that consists of 10 high-tech, flexible classrooms that open for team teaching as well as one large multipurpose room called the “toolbox.” This area is divided into five zones of integrated instruction, including research with reference materials, a wet/dry lab, art design, technology education and fabrication. Outside access is available for environmental studies.
